Are all citrus oils photosensitive?

One of the questions I’m asked most often is whether all citrus essential oils are photosensitive.
When I first started studying aromatherapy over 10 years ago, I was taught that citrus oils should always be used with caution because of photosensitivity. I remember being quite nervous whenever I included them in a blend!
As I continued learning over the years, I realized the answer isn’t that simple. Not all citrus oils are photosensitive, and even among those that are, the level of risk varies.
For example:
Sweet Orange – Not photosensitive
Bitter Orange - Photosensitive (max. 1.25%)
Bergamot – Highly photosensitive (max. 0.4%)
Bergamot FCF – Not photosensitive
Lemon – Photosensitive (max. 2%)
Lime distilled – Not photosensitive
Lime expressed – Photosensitive (max. 0.7%)
Photosensitivity happens when certain essential oils on the skin react to UV exposure, which may cause redness, irritation, burning, or even sunburn-like reactions.
The key isn’t just whether an oil is photosensitive—it’s also about using the right dilution and understanding how to use it safely.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned over the years is that aromatherapy is always evolving. The more we learn, the more we realize that things aren’t always black and white.
A certification isn’t the end of learning—it’s just the beginning. Staying curious and keeping our knowledge up to date helps us make safer, more informed choices for ourselves and our client.
